I inform you that another summer intensif rroma dance workshop will take place in Belgrade, Serbia in august 2008:

***** ANNUAL SERBIAN BALKANIAN RROMA DANCE WORKSHOP *****

Belgrade, August 1st to 7th, 2008

As each year, Simona Jovic will welcome you in her country for a 20 hours rroma and balkanian dance workshop. The workshop will be teached by Simona Jovic, Dobrosav Grocic and live musicians. Join us to learn more about how to dance on the rromani and traditionnal music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The workshop will be teached in english, french and serbian.

* Dance programme :

Cocek rroma dance from Southern Balkans
The biggest part of this 20 hours serbian workshop will be dedicated to this gracefull and joyfull dance, danced in the rromani communities in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and south of Serbia. Danced by women and men, it remains very oriental with the big turkish influences thanks to the 5 centuries ottoman occupation of that area.

Vranjanska svita (with the tamburine)
Vranjanska svita is a dance and song from Vranje in south of Serbia. It is composed of three parts : first women dance part on the beautifful song "Sano duso" (7/8 rhythme). Second, the men dance called "Tesko oro". And the third part is the women cocek rromani dance danced with the tambourine on the 9/8 very fast rhythme. It is the most oriental of all traditionnal serbian dances and one the most beautifull.

Rromani Oros
Cercle or line dances from south of the Balkans. According to the rhythme, if it's regular or irregular, if it's 7/8 or 9/8, if it's slow or fast, the step of the oro will change. In this workshop will be teached only those danced by the Rroma in their mariages and festivities.

Serbian kolo
Kolo is the synonym for oro, also a cercle or line dance, but this appelation is used in Central Serbia and it is mostly assimilated to the "two bite rhytme kolos" and not the "oriental" ones. Lively and friendly, kolo is the dance of sharing between Gadje and Rroma that will give you the liberty to have fun at any balkanian festivity.

Hi!

Does anyone know what happened to the 'serbians' tribe? I know there are some cross-over members in this tribe. It seems to have disappeared. Let's introduce ourselves. I'll start:

I'm anna, I'm an American of Serbian/Scottish/Scandanavian descent. I've always identified most with the Serbian branch in my family. I don't speak Serbian, although I am learning a few words (thanx patrick!) I would love to learn more about all of you. Who are you? What have your experiences been like?

Hvala, Anna

BARRIO TO THE BALKANS: Kultur Shock/La Plebe Wed. May 24

FROM THE BARRIO TO THE BALKANS:
SEATTLE’S KULTUR SHOCK AND SAN FRANCISCO’S LA PLEBE MIX IT UP FOR A SPECTACULAR CLASH OF CULTURE AND SOUND!!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 24
SF’S BOTTOM OF THE HILL

After turning heads and blowing minds during last month's two night stint at Slim’s with Gogol Bordello, this show marks Kultur Shock triumphant return to San Francisco to play their particular brand of aggressive Balkan music at The Bottom of the Hill. Consisting of members from Bosnia, Bulgaria and Japan(!), they have been described by UK Metal Hammer Magazine as “the very model of a m!ulti-cultural punk rock band, just your everyday American-Japanese Spanglish Balkan Mariachi punk rock band.” The fact is, they’re all that, but louder.

Kultur Shock was formed in 1998 by Gino Yevdjevich, a Sarajevo refugee who emigrated to Seattle one year earlier. They released their first album "Live in Amerika" in 1999, and via SF's Jello Biafra, was introduced to Faith No More's Billy Gould, who then produced their two subsequent albums "FUCC the INS" (2001) and "Kultura Diktatura" (2004) and released them on his SF based indie label Koolarrow Records. This is their last scheduled appearance before the release of their upcoming album "We Have Come To Take Your Jobs Away", due for release September 2006.

Co-headlining this event will be local favorites "La Plebe", the Mission District's hardest working, beer guzzling "barrio street punk with horns outfit". With three cds under their belt (“Conquista 21”, “Exploited People”, and “Entre Cerveza, Ritmo y Emocion”) they have made a name for themselves as a pure-hearted punk band who’s well known for their legendary shows, relentless West Coast touring (including full 3 tours of Mexico) , and invaluable contribution to the local music community. This will be their last SF show before they embark on their 2006 "Sin Fronteras" Tour (trans: "Without Borders") of the Balkans (Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania and points in between). In fact, May 24 marks the kickoff for the tour, which officially begins the following morning.

Opening the show will be Fuga, formed in 2000 in El Paso, Texas and have since relocated to the SF Bay Area. Thier dedication to social and political issues permeates throughout their lyrics expressing a sense of hope.creating passionate uplifting music for the growing bilingual population.

IT DOESN’T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS…AND IT’S ALL AGES!!

Pride vs Nationalist Chauvanism

I think that a lot of Serbs living abroad have a challenge. They are trying to live with the stigma of being Serbs (thanks to Milosevic years and heavy handed journalism). So they feel that they have to defend their honor. But there is also a great deal of nationalism both among Serbian-Americans, Serbian-Canadians etc and among recent immigrants. To the rest of the population, this chauvanism is annoying. Most of us would hope that those who have left their country behind would also leave behind it's prejudices and hatreds. I would be interested to know how people in this tribe who are Serbs living abroad or descendents of Serb immigrants have observed nationalist chauvanism and how they've dealt with it in their current home countries.

Article "Serbia Holding Montenegro "Hostage"

I found this interesting. The part about Montenegro isn't surprising, but the part about Vojvodina is troubling. Vojvodina, in my mind and observations, has always been the most peaceable, happily multi-cultural part of Serbia.

Serbia Holding Montenegro "Hostage"
2004-09-19
Montenegro does not wish to continue being held hostage by Serbia, the federative country's Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic declared on Saturday.

He said that Serbia-Montenegro has come to a stop as far as Euro Atlantic integration is concerned reminding that Brussels had issued a report declaring the union did not function properly and will therefore stop work on a report meant to investigate the possibility of an agreement for association.

"Serbia has problems with The Tribunal. We have fulfilled all of our obligations. If Montenegro was independent at the time of the last NATO summit, we would have been accepted. We do not wish to be Serbia's hostage any longer." Djukanovic was quoted saying by local radio B92.

According to Djukanovic, the peaceful talks between Serbia and Kosovo for separation should start before the three-year term of the Belgrade agreement elapses, while bilateral relations with Podgorica pose no problems.

Montenegrin prime minister's statement came in the dawn of the local elections in Serbia, the first since the fall of the regime upheld by Slobodan Milosevic, now a Hague Tribunal defendant.

Serbs are choosing 148 municipal councils and mayors and electing a parliament of the northern province of Vojvodina, recent scene of reported strains between Serbs and the ethnic Hungarian minority.

Observers predicted that ruling democrats would preserve their bastion in the capital, while the opposition radicals are likely to prevail in the province.
